Ms. Syed was holidaying in Cornwall when she became ill due to raw sewage dumps in the ocean near the resort. It was shown in the High Court that the Environment Agency was complicit in these dumps as it routinely failed to enforce laws preventing these dumps. The Environment Agency successful appealed to the Court of Appeal, stating they had no responsibility for the actions of individual water companies. Ms. Syed now appeals to the Supreme Court.
